General Letter
Dear CGU members and colleagues,

As you are aware, in late 2020 we decided to cancel this year’s in-person CGU meeting in Banff. We are pleased to provide some details about our continued efforts to stay connected as a scientific community through this year’s virtual programming.

Currently, information about online scientific sessions and a call for abstracts have been distributed by email; this information is now also being uploaded to our website and distributed via social media. For this year, our objective is to present two online sessions per week throughout June and July. The schedule will be determined based on the number of abstracts submitted by our membership and will be announced to roughly coincide with the May long weekend. A broad representation of the CGU’s various sections is anticipated for the finalized schedule, given our receipt of 15 different session proposals spanning the spectrum of CGU activities.

Differently from last year, we are formally accepting abstracts for online, virtual presentations. This is being done via email (see template provided on website) with submission due May 10 (to info@cgu-ugc.ca). Note that the abstract submission deadline has been extended to May 17th. Abstract submissions are free this year, as is the opportunity to participate in this year’s virtual sessions. We only ask that presenters renew their CGU memberships, which also allows us to more easily communicate with members regarding session access and other details.

Thank you all for your patience as we organize this year’s scientific presentations. Please do feel free to contact us through info@cgu-ugc.ca for any feedback you may have. We will be in touch soon.

Sincerely,
Carl Mitchell President, CGU

Cancellation of In-Person Banff 2021 Meeting and Award Deadline Changes
It is with a heavy heart that the CGU executive has decided to cancel the planned in-person CGU annual meeting in Banff, which was set for May 2021. In light of current circumstances related to the Covid19 pandemic, there is too much uncertainty for us to proceed or for our membership to make plans in the near future about their in-person session proposals, travel, etc. We have confirmed with the Banff Park Lodge that we will return there for our May 2023 meeting. As many of you may already know, we are partnering with CMOS to hold a joint meeting May 29-June 2, 2022 in Saskatoon.

Despite the disappointment of not being able to meet together in person for yet another year, we do intend to proceed with an online series of talks and events that are appealing to our membership. To this end, we will be reaching out shortly via CGU sections to ask members for proposals of online session themes. Based on themes, we will then be reaching out to the general membership to submit abstracts in early 2021.

Based on these changes, we will also be altering the current deadlines for award nomination submissions both for Union level awards and for student scholarships and awards (i.e., Tuzo Wilson medal; Young Scientist and Meritorious Service awards; Stan Paterson and Don Gray scholarships; CGU and Chevron best paper awards). All deadlines for applications and nominations will be postponed to early 2021. Please stay tuned for further information on updates on our website.
