INTERNATIONAL UNION OF GEODESY AND GEOPHYSICS

TERMS OF REFERENCE
- The purpose of the Committee is:
- to promote, within Canada, such as to ensure maximal benefits
to Canada, international programs in Geodesy and Geophysics
and Canadian participation in international activities sponsored
by the IUGG, its component International Associations, Inter-Union
Commissions and special committees of ICSU which involve the
IUGG;
- to promote, within the IUGG, its component International
Associations, Inter-Union Commissions and special committees
for ICSU which involve the IUGG, those international activities
which are relevant, or of special interest, to Canada, and to
coordinate all aspects of Canadian participation in the discussion
and dissemination of the results of such activities;
- to formulate Canadian positions with respect to IUGG activities
and those of its component International Associations and of
other related committees and commissions and to advise Council
on the activities of the IUGG, its component International Associations
and the other related committees and commissions, the activities
of the CNC/IUGG and of Canadian participation in the same, where
appropriate;
- to act as a channel of communication among the IUGG, its
component International Associations, other related committees
and commissions, Council, Canadian scientific societies, scientists
and Canadian industry.
- Members of the Committee shall consist of:
Appointed Members
- two members for each of the seven Associations of the IUGG,
to be selected in consultation with the following Canadian scientific
organizations:
- Five from the Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU)
- Four from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic
Society (CMOS)
- One from the Canadian Institute of Surveying and Mapping
(CIS)
- One from the Division of Aeronomy and Space Physics of
the Canadian Association of Physics (DASP/CAP)
- Two from the Associate Committee on Hydrology (ACH)
- One from the Volconological Division of the Geological
Association of Canada (VD/GAC)
- other members selected by the NRC in consultation with the
Committee Ex-officio
- Canadian members of the Bureau of the International Union
of Geodesy and Geophysics
- Canadian presidents of International associations affiliated
with the IUGG
- the Chairman of the Canadian National Committee on the Dynamics
and Evolution of the Lithosphere (CANDEL), or any major inter-union
project involving the IUGG as a major participant
- the editor of the Canadian Geophysical Bulletin.
A representative of the International Relations Secretariat of the
National Research Council shall be an observer.
Honorary Members
- past Chairmen of the Associate Committee on Geodesy and Geophysics
and the CNC/IUGG.
A chairman shall be appointed from among the Committee on the recommendation
of the Committee and a secretary will be appointed by the NRC.
For each vacancy, the nominating body should make more than one
nomination, taking into account the following guidelines:
- due regard should be taken of proper geographical and linguistic
distribution of membership as well as adequate representation
of all disciplines covered by (international affiliation); whenever
possible the membership should include at least one member of
each of the following regions: the Atlantic provinces, Quebec,
Ontario and Western Canada.
- except under unusual circumstances, there should be no more
than one member per institution on the Committee.
- The terms of office for all appointed members of the committee
shall normally be a four-year appointment with the possibility
of renewal up to a maximum of another four years; termination
shall be on the 31st of December of the last year
in office.
- The Committee shall meet:
- as necessary
- not more than three months prior to a general assembly,
and
- not later than six months after a general assembly.
The head of the Canadian delegation of the International Union of
Geodesy and Geophysics General Assembly should normally be present
at the CNC meetings: the Chairman of the CNC/IUGG will normally
be appointed the Head of the Canadian delegation the IUGG General
Assemblies.
One half of the appointed membership shall constitute a
quorum.
