The GWF program is a collaborative initiative between multiple Canadian universities and partner organizations funded through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (http://gwf.usask.ca/). GWF aims to deliver risk management solutions for water resources and services – informed by leading edge water science and supported by innovative decision-making tools – in Canada and throughout the cold regions of the world. We are looking to hire six (6) Postdoctoral scientists (PDS) at the University of Waterloo (UW) as part of a multidisciplinary GWF modeling and forecasting team. The PDS will directly link to UW research strengths in hydrology, ecohydrology, environmental (bio)geochemistry, aquatic biology, high-performance computing, information systems, water economics, and water governance. Hence, the PDS will be ideally positioned to mobilize this capacity in support of GWF research projects and end-user needs.
The PDS will engage in a wide range of topics, including groundwater-surface water interactions, water quality forecasting, nutrient fluxes and speciation, contaminant fate and transport, source water protection, river systems and lakes, eutrophication, urban ecohydrology, ecosystem services valuation, best management practices, climate and land use change impacts, uncertainty and risk assessments, cost-benefit analyses, hydroeconomics and water quality-related health risks. The six PDS positions map to the following areas:
- Model-data assimilation systems for inland water quality forecasting and analysis;
- Biogeochemical reaction networks for carbon, nutrients and contaminants;
- Multiscale watershed hydrological flow and water quality modeling;
- Cold regions lake modeling: ice dynamics, circulation, nutrient cycles and algal blooms;
- Ecosystem services valuation, water accounting and hydroeconomic modeling; and
- Regional flow and chemical fluxes within the variably saturated subsurface.
Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant water science field. They must demonstrate strong quantitative skills and have a track record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications. Previous postdoctoral experience is desirable, but not necessary. Additional desired qualifications include a modeling/numerical simulation background, experience in supervising students, and expertise in integrated modeling, high performance computing and large dataset analysis and manipulation. Applicants will be expected to have good communication skills and be fluent in English. They must be able to work independently, as well as within a multidisciplinary research team. They will be expected to produce peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports. They will interact on a regular basis with external partners and practitioners.
