Position #1
We are looking for a PhD student for the project “Understanding carbon mineralization in sabkhas: microbial mats, minerals and carbon sequestration” funded by Qatar Foundation for 3 years starting 2020. Applications are open to well-motivated and highly-qualified persons. Prerequisites for this position are – recent Master’s degree in Biogeochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geology with a strong background in biogeochemistry, mineralogy and/or microbiology; – Interest in geobiology, geomicrobiology, carbon cycle, biomineralization, biofilms; – project and time management; -Experience in organic carbon analysis in soil and water samples, CO2 and CH4 sample collections and analysis, microsensors, working experience in the field in the extreme environment, Raman spectroscopy, Atomic Force microscopy, Electron microscopy, omics technologies, DNA and RNA extractions, culturing strains from soils, working with biofilms, bioinformatics and/or sample preparation for the above-mentioned techniques; -Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Position #2
We are looking for a PhD student in the project “The impact of climate-driven factors on carbon and phosphorus burial fluxes in lake sediments” funded by NSERC. Applications are open to well-motivated and highly-qualified persons. Prerequisites for this position are – recent Master’s degree in Biogeochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Isotopic Geochemistry, Geology with a strong background in biogeochemistry, mineralogy and/or microbiology; Background in carbon and phosphorus cycle in lake sediments, application of oxygen isotopes in phosphate will be preferable as well as experience in organic carbon analysis in soil and water samples, CO2 and CH4 sample collections and analysis, microsensors, working experience in the field.

Position #3
We are looking for a PhD student for the project “Elucidation of phosphorus release from its legacy in soils and developing a sustainable bioremediation technique for recycling phosphorus” funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Applications are open to well-motivated and highly-qualified persons. Prerequisites for this position are – recent Master’s degree in Biogeochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Isotopic Geochemistry, Geology with a strong background in biogeochemistry, mineralogy and/or microbiology; Background in microbial calcium carbonate or dolomite precipitation; Electron microscopy, omics technologies, DNA and RNA extractions, culturing strains from soils, working with biofilms, bioinformatics and/or sample preparation for the above-mentioned techniques; Interest in applied science, working at the interface between science and practice.
