CGU Young Scientist Award

The CGU Young Scientist Award recognizes outstanding research contributions by a young scientist who is a CGU member. Both the quality and impact of research are considered. The award is made by the CGU Executive on the recommendations of a special committee struck for this purpose.

See here for the full terms of reference.

Any CGU member is eligible for the Young Scientist award, as long as they:

  • Have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree;
  • Are within 10 years of obtaining their first Ph.D. or equivalent degree; and
  • Work in one area of geophysical research that falls within the scope of the CGU.

On December 2, 2024, the CGU Executive approved a modification to the abovementioned eligibility criteria. For the 2025 competition, the period of eligibility for the Young Scientist Award will be adjusted for NSERC-eligible leaves taken since the granting of the PhD. These NSERC-eligible leaves (e.g., maternity leave, parental leave, personal illness, chronic illness or disability associated with reduced research activity, leave taken by applicants for family-related illness, bereavement) will be credited as twice the amount of time taken.

Nominations should be submitted to the Chair of the Awards Committee (email: genevieve.ali@mcgill.ca). Please note that for 2025 awards, nomination packages will be accepted until January 21, 2025. Any other changes to the typical application or nomination procedures will be communicated by email to registered CGU members.
