CGU Mid-Career Scientist Award

The Canadian Geophysical Union Mid-Career Scientist Award is presented annually and recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in any research area of the Union, namely Biogeosciences, Geodesy, Hydrology and Solid Earth. Both quality and impact of research are considered. The award is made by the CGU Executive on the recommendations of a special committee struck for this purpose.

Any CGU member is eligible for the Mid-Career Scientist Award, as long as they:

  • Have a Ph.D., or equivalent degree;
  • Be 10-20 years after obtaining their first Ph.D., or equivalent degree;
  • Be a member of the Canadian Geophysical Union.

All areas of research that fall within the scope of the CGU will be considered.

The period of eligibility for the Mid-Career Scientist Award will be adjusted for NSERC-eligible leaves taken since the granting of the PhD. These leaves (e.g., maternity leave, parental leave, personal illness, chronic illness or disability associated with reduced research activity, leave taken by applicants for family- related illness, bereavement) will be credited as twice the amount of time taken. See terms of reference.

Nominations should be submitted to the Chair of the Awards Committee Georgia Fotopoulos (email: georgia.fotopoulos@queensu.ca). Please note that the nomination deadline aligns with the abstract submission deadline for each year’s CGU annual meeting. Any other changes to the typical application or nomination procedures will be communicated by email to registered CGU members.
